Over the last few years, the Я2R Racing team has discussed what we could do to give back and to play a more active role in the cycling community. When I took over as the president of Я2R in 2019 we decided that giving back was definitely something we wanted to do. Many of us consider PLRA our home trail and have long assisted at PLRA by cutting and removing downed trees, trimming and building the new bridge in 2019.
Fast forward to 2020 and the previous Trail Coordinator reached out to me to see if I had any interest in the position. Knowing I would need the support of the whole team, I reached out to the Я2R crew and we quickly decided that we would tackle the new position together.
Within about 24 hours Я2R Trail Crew was developed (a small group due to COVID 19) and we were off in running – immediately tackling the wet areas at Mile 6 (Fresh Meat).
Since then we have invested countless hours working on the trail and have enjoyed overwhelming support – adding additional volunteers of all ages that want to be a part of the Я2R Trail Crew. Large monetary investments have been made by me personally and using money that was donated by other members to buy all kinds of trail working tools. We have purchased wheel barrels, trail carts, trimmers, shovels, axes, rakes, and chainsaws to assist with the hard work of maintaining such a large trail system. During the 2020 season, the trail has totally transformed and now in the best shape it’s been in years. We have added new berms, trimmed back all trail sides, added drainage, a stump jump, a 35 foot long skinny and addressed many sketchy/dangerous areas. And there is more to come.
I’ve enjoyed my time as Trail Coordinator and we appreciate all the positive feedback we have received online and out on the trail. We enjoy seeing everyone out enjoying the fruits of our labor.
